How to reset KitchenAid refrigerator water filter light, and why it came on

Start with what the light is, because it changes how seriously you take it.

It is a counter, not a sensor. Nothing in your refrigerator tests the water or measures what the cartridge has caught. The control counts months and counts water drawn, and when it reaches the number it was given, it turns the reminder on. That is the entire mechanism.

Two things follow. The light coming on is not a symptom of anything and does not mean the water became unsafe overnight. And resetting it without changing the cartridge does nothing at all except silence a reminder — the counter starts again, the cartridge keeps aging, and the only person misled is you.

The reset itself

Press and hold the filter or reset key for about three seconds, until the indicator changes color or the word clears. That is the whole procedure on most of these cabinets.

Three variations to know about:

• Touch display models. There is no dedicated key. The reset lives under settings or filter status on the screen.
• Older dispenser panels. Some use a combination — two keys held together, often the ones flanking the display. Your use and care guide names them.
• Panels that ignore you. Try it with both doors closed. Some controls will not accept a reset while a door switch is open, and people conclude the key is dead when it is simply not listening.

Hold until something visibly changes rather than counting in your head. A short press is the most common reason a "reset" does not take.

Do the reset last — after the cartridge is in and flushed. It is the receipt, not the job.

Which cartridge is yours: KAD1 through KAD6, and the second name

This is where the store aisle defeats people, and it is worth two minutes.

KitchenAid's refrigerator cartridges are sold as KAD1, KAD2, KAD3, KAD4, KAD5 and KAD6. The identical cartridges are also sold under a second name, everydrop, as EDR1 through EDR6, matched number for number. The same part, two boxes, two shelf positions, often two prices.

So when you find yourself holding a KAD3 in one hand and an EDR3 in the other, you are not choosing between two parts. You are choosing between two labels on the same part. What you must not do is take a number that is close: a 4 does not fit where a 3 goes, and a cartridge that nearly fits is a cartridge that leaks behind your cabinet.

Where to find your number: printed on the cartridge already in the refrigerator, listed in the use and care guide, and cross-referenced against the cabinet model number, which lives on a plate inside the fresh food section on the left wall or behind the crisper.

Changing it

Two housings exist across this line.

In the base grille, along the bottom of the cabinet. Push the cartridge in like a ballpoint pen; it ejects, and pulls straight out.

Inside the fresh food section, upper right corner. Open the little door and turn the cartridge counterclockwise about a quarter turn, and it drops down out of the housing.

On both, there is no need to shut off the household supply — the housing closes itself when the cartridge leaves. If the cartridge will not turn, the housing door is still latched rather than the cartridge being stuck. Never force it.

Seat the new one fully, until it clicks or stops squarely. Then flush it: run several quarts through the dispenser, pausing when it spits and sputters. That is trapped air working out of the line, it is normal after every change, and it clears with volume rather than time. Throw away the first batch of ice afterward.

Three filters, three different objects

People run these together constantly, and they have nothing in common except the word.

• The water cartridge, this page. A sealed carbon block in the water line, KAD1–KAD6 or the matching EDR number, changed on a counter roughly twice a year.
• A hood's metal grease filter. Mesh or baffle, washable, monthly, over your cooktop.
• A charcoal air filter, in a recirculating range hood or a microwave-hood combination. Consumable, replaced not washed, roughly twice a year, and it exists only when the ventilation returns air to the room.

Some refrigerators also carry a small air filter cartridge inside the fresh food section, which is a fourth object again — an odor filter with its own indicator, and not the thing this light is asking about. Each of those has its own page here.

What a fresh cartridge does not fix

If your water tastes of chlorine again a week after a change, the cartridge is not the suspect — check that it is fully seated and that it is the right number.

If flow has dropped everywhere, including at the ice maker, and a new cartridge did not restore it, look upstream: the saddle valve or shut-off behind the cabinet, and a supply line that has been kinked against the wall since the refrigerator was pushed back. That is a very common find and it costs nothing to check.

If the dispenser is fine and only the ice maker is idle, give it a day after the change and then work outward — the shut-off arm or sensor, the fill tube frozen solid, the inlet valve, and the module last. Most of what stops a refrigerator ice maker is water arriving rather than the machine itself.

And if you have gone through all of that and the light is still on with a genuinely new cartridge in place, book it rather than living with a reminder that never clears. On a panel that shares that key with other functions, it is a real failure and a small one.
