A machine that keeps trying to redistribute and gives up. A single heavy item — a rug, a comforter — will do it every time, and it is free to prove.

Redistribute the load and try again
Especially with anything large and heavy. A machine that then spins perfectly has told you it is healthy and had a bad Monday.

Look at the drain hose
Kinked behind the machine, pushed too far down the standpipe, or draining into a sink that is itself slow. All three are outside the appliance.

Test the lid switch by hand
On a top-loader, press the plunger in the frame and listen. If the machine changes its mind about spinning, you have found it.

The fastest diagnosis on a machine with no display
These are old enough that most of them show you nothing at all, so the diagnosis comes from what the machine does rather than what it says. Start at the drain hose and the trap, then check the lid switch or the door lock — a machine that does not believe the lid is shut will not spin, and on a top-loader that is one small switch producing a very dramatic symptom.
