Symptom
KitchenAid the refrigerator is freezing everything
Lettuce with ice crystals in it and milk with a slush layer on top. Running too cold is a real complaint with its own short list of causes, and it is nearly always about where the air is going rather than about the setting on the panel.

Five ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
Food sitting in the cold air stream
Anything pressed against the back wall or directly under a vent freezes while the rest of the cabinet is fine. The commonest cause and free to fix.
-
The setting was changed
A nudged control, or a child pressing buttons. Worth ruling out before anything else, especially if the change was sudden rather than gradual.
-
A damper stuck open
The opposite of the not-cooling complaint. Cold air keeps arriving after the cabinet has had enough, and the fresh food side runs below where it should.

A thermistor reading wrong
These cabinets read temperature in several places. A sensor lying by a few degrees makes the cabinet behave strangely rather than stop altogether.

The control board
Where it goes when the sensors read correctly and the cabinet still runs cold. The last one on the list rather than the first.

Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

01
Clear the back wall and the vents
Pull everything a couple of inches forward, especially on the top shelf. Then wait a day. A surprising share of this complaint ends here.
-
02
Check the setting on the panel
And whether anybody has been playing with it. Set the fresh food side to around 37°F and the freezer to 0°F rather than to a numbered position you cannot interpret.
-
03
Measure in a glass of water
Four hours, middle shelf. Air readings swing with every door opening and will tell you the cabinet is fine when it is not.
-
04
Then book the visit
Tell us whether it is the whole cabinet or one shelf, and whether the freezer is over-freezing as well — that difference separates airflow from control.

About KitchenAid the refrigerator is freezing everything
If you are looking up kitchenaid refrigerator freezing food, this is the page: the refrigerator is freezing everything, what it usually turns out to be, and the check worth doing before anybody is called out in Miami.
The fastest diagnosis is the code
Move everything off the back wall and out of the top shelf directly under the vents, then check the temperature setting has not been changed — these panels are easy to nudge and a cabinet set two degrees colder behaves very differently. A thermometer in a glass of water beats any judgement by hand here.
Cold has to arrive somewhere
Air comes into the fresh food section through a small number of vents, and directly in front of those vents it is much colder than the cabinet average. That is why the complaint is so often local: one shelf, one corner, the back of the top rack. Before anything is diagnosed, it is worth finding out whether the whole cabinet is cold or one part of it is.
When the whole cabinet is running cold
Then it is the damper metering that air, a sensor telling the control the wrong story, or the control itself. All three are real repairs, all three are diagnosed in the same visit, and the exact cost is confirmed on site before anything is done.

Questions about KitchenAid the refrigerator is freezing everything
Only the back of the shelf freezes.
That is airflow rather than a temperature problem. Cold air enters at the back and anything sitting in the stream freezes while the front of the same shelf is fine. Moving things forward a couple of inches usually solves it completely.
Could this be the same problem as not cooling?
It can share parts with it. A damper and a thermistor can both stick either way, so the same components appear on both pages — but the direction tells us which way to test, and it is worth being specific when you book.
Is running colder actually harmful?
To the food, yes — produce, eggs and dairy all suffer. To the cabinet it mostly means running more than it needs to. Neither is an emergency, but both are worth fixing rather than working around by moving the setting up.
