Both kinds of filter
Mesh or baffle grease filters are washed; charcoal filters on a recirculating hood are consumable and are replaced. People find the first and almost never the second.

Degrease the wheel and the housing
This is the half a filter cannot reach and the half that makes a hood loud and inefficient. A balanced clean wheel moves more air with less motor.

Free the damper
On a ducted hood the damper has to open under airflow and close when the fan stops. Stuck shut, it undoes the whole appliance; stuck open, it lets outside air back into your kitchen.

Check the run to the outside
Length, bends and the flap at the far end. A hood fighting its ducting was never going to work well, and that is worth knowing rather than replacing a motor to find out.

How often should the filters be cleaned?
Roughly monthly if you cook most days. Grease-loaded mesh or baffle filters strangle the airflow, so the hood gets louder and less effective at the same time and the motor works harder for it. Most of them go in the dishwasher — check yours does before you find out.
Mine has a charcoal filter as well. What is that for?
It means the hood recirculates rather than ducting outside: it filters the air and returns it to the room. Charcoal filters cannot be washed and are replaced, and a recirculating hood that has stopped clearing smoke is very often one that nobody knew was there.
Is this worth paying for?
If you cook the way most South Florida kitchens do, yes — this is the cheapest visit on the site and it prevents the most common one above it. A hood serviced once a year rarely needs a blower motor.
