Where the leak is
A joint reachable at the back of the cabinet is one job. A leak in a coil buried inside the cabinet is another, and the difference is access rather than refrigerant. Finding it is part of the work, not an extra.

A compressor, or the thing that starts it
A compressor that will not start is often a relay or an overload costing a small fraction of one, and that is measured before anything is condemned. It is the cheapest possible outcome on this page and it is a real one.

Why this page is reached rather than chosen
Every cheaper cause of "it is not cold" produces exactly the same complaint, and every one of them is more likely than this. The condenser, the condenser fan, the evaporator fan, the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat, the sensor, the damper and the door seals all come first, and they are all measured and excluded on record before refrigerant work is mentioned. Not a top-up. A sealed system does not consume refrigerant, so a system that is low has leaked, and refilling it without finding where buys you a few months and the same invoice again.
Where the range comes from
Researched market figures put a compressor replacement at roughly $600 to $1,200 and leak location and repair at $400 to $900, parts and labor together. Our starting figure sits at $650, and where in that band a particular job lands depends on where the leak is and what running low on charge has already done to the compressor.

A sealed system that is low has leaked, because it is sealed and does not consume refrigerant. Refilling it without finding the leak buys a few months and costs the same again — and the second time the compressor has been running low on charge for those months, which does not help.
How do I know you have not skipped to this?
