KitchenAid refrigerator not cooling: repair cost
Where most refrigeration calls actually land, and the band you reach the expensive one by eliminating. Airflow, defrost, dampers and sensors — everything between "it is not cold" and the sealed system.

A starting point for built-in appliances in South Florida, published so the number is not a mystery until somebody is standing in your kitchen.

What moves it
Why two of the same job cost different amounts
These apply at the same time and in both directions. Which of them is true of your kitchen is what the on-site diagnostic settles.
-
Which compartment is wrong
This is the most valuable sentence you can give us, and it settles most of the figure before anybody arrives. Fresh food warm with a cold freezer is a single-evaporator cabinet with an airflow problem — a fan, a damper or a defrost circuit — and it is the lower half of this band. Both compartments warm together is a different search.
-
A sensor, or the circuit it watches
A thermistor and the heater it reports on produce the same complaint from the kitchen, and the sensor is much the cheaper of the two at a researched $100 to $250. Measuring rather than assuming is the entire difference in the figure.
-
How the cabinet is fitted
A freestanding French door rolls out. A built-in trimmed into millwork with a panelled door does not, and the evaporator sits behind panels inside it. That is planned time, and it is why we ask how yours is installed when you book.

What we actually do
The job behind the figure: what it involves, when a symptom points at it, and what we check first.
-
from $245 Refrigerator defrost & cooling repair
The fresh food side warm while the freezer is still cold. It is the most diagnostic sentence a caller can say, and it very rarely means what people fear it means.
- Defrost heater, thermostat and sensor tested as a circuit
- Evaporator fan and airflow proved before anything larger
- Coil de-iced and the cause dealt with, not just the ice

About KitchenAid refrigerator not cooling: repair cost
The band the expensive repair is reached through
Everything on this page is cheaper than a sealed system repair, and every one of these causes produces the same complaint. That is why the order matters financially rather than only procedurally: a quote for refrigerant work given without this list worked through is a large number attached to a guess. Condenser, condenser fan, evaporator fan, defrost heater, defrost thermostat, defrost sensor, damper, door seals — measured and excluded, on record, before anything above $650 is mentioned.
Warm fridge, cold freezer
This is the classic single-evaporator behavior and it confuses people reasonably: if the freezer is cold, the refrigerant is clearly working. It is. The cold air for the fresh-food side is made in the freezer and blown across, so an evaporator fan that has stopped, or a coil iced solid because the defrost circuit is not clearing it, leaves the freezer cold and the fresh food warm. It is airflow rather than refrigerant, and it lives at the cheap end of this page.
Why manually defrosting it is a misleading test
Emptying the cabinet and letting the ice go will make it work for a few days, which is exactly what makes it unhelpful. The frost came back because something in the defrost circuit stopped clearing it — a heater, a thermostat or a sensor — and that is what has to be found. If somebody has already done this once and it returned, tell us: it is a diagnosis rather than a false start.
Where the floor of this page comes from
A freezer frost and drain clear starts at $155 — a blocked defrost drain refreezing into a sheet of ice under the drawer, which then becomes water on your floor. A defrost circuit repair starts at $245 and a control or sensor repair at $225. The exact cost is confirmed after an on-site diagnostic and agreed in writing before anything is opened.

Questions about KitchenAid refrigerator not cooling: repair cost
The freezer is fine and the fridge is warm.
Then it is very unlikely to be refrigerant, and that is good news. On a single-evaporator cabinet the cold air is made in the freezer and blown across, so a stopped fan, an iced coil or a damper that is not opening produces exactly this. All three sit at the cheaper end of this page.
There is water on the kitchen floor from under the freezer.
A blocked defrost drain, most often. The ice builds under the drawer, reaches the front, and melts onto the floor. Clearing the drain is the floor of this page at $155, and it is a good deal cheaper than what the water does to the flooring if it is left.
How do I know it is not the compressor?
Because everything cheaper is measured and excluded first, and you get that list rather than a conclusion. A repeating click, hum and click with the temperature rising is the one pattern that genuinely points that way, and it is worth mentioning when you book.
Should I clean the condenser myself?
Yes, and it is worth doing whether or not anything is wrong. The grille comes off on most cabinets and a vacuum gets the loose dust. What that does not do is measure the fan or find what let the coil ice up, which is usually what turned a warm cabinet into a phone call.
