Open and close the door firmly
A couple of times, fully. Check the seal for anything caught in it and look at the latch hooks for damage. This resolves a real share of these.

Cut the power for a full minute
At the breaker on a built-in or over-the-range machine, at the plug on a countertop one. The manufacturer names resetting power as the first step for several microwave codes.

Usually a press-and-hold on one of the number or cancel keys, and usually shown by a small lock symbol. Easy to switch on by accident and easy to miss.

Open the door fully and close it again firmly a couple of times, and check nothing has been caught in the seal or bent on the latch hooks. There are several interlock switches behind that door and the appliance will not run unless every one of them agrees — which is exactly what you want from a machine that produces microwaves.
The door is not a formality
There are several interlock switches around a microwave door, wired so that the appliance cannot produce power unless all of them agree the door is shut. That is a deliberate piece of over-engineering and it is why a single drifted switch stops the entire machine. It is also why this symptom is common and why it is a repair rather than an adjustment you should attempt at home.
The power cycle is documented, not folklore
