One safety line first, and then the diagnosis
Do not open the cabinet, and do not let anyone tell you this is a simple part swap. The capacitor inside a microwave holds a charge that can injure you long after the appliance has been unplugged, and it does not care that the power has been off overnight. Everything else on this site has a "here is what you can check" paragraph. This appliance does not, deliberately.
Why the symptom is so specific
A microwave has two halves: the ordinary appliance — light, turntable, fan, timer, touch panel — and the high-voltage side that actually cooks. When the second half fails, the first half carries on exactly as before. That is why "everything works and the food is cold" is such a clean diagnosis, and why we can usually tell you what is coming before anyone arrives.
What we do about the fitting
Over-the-range and built-in machines are part of a kitchen rather than boxes on a counter, and on a microwave-hood combination a dead microwave means a dead hood as well. That changes the repair-or-replace math, because replacing the appliance means matching an opening and trim that may no longer be made. It is worth an honest conversation before anything is ordered.

Is it safe to keep using it?
A microwave that runs and does not heat is not dangerous to stand next to, but there is no reason to keep running it — you are heating nothing and stressing a circuit that has already failed. Unplug it and book, and do not open the cabinet in the meantime.
Why can I not fix this myself?
Because of the capacitor. It stores a charge large enough to cause serious injury and it holds that charge after the appliance is unplugged. This is the one repair in a kitchen where the internet advice is genuinely dangerous, and we will not write a checklist that encourages it.
Is it worth repairing?
That depends on the machine. On a built-in unit or a combination oven-microwave built into a cabinet, very often yes — replacing the appliance means the opening and the trim as well. On a countertop machine it frequently is not, and we will say so rather than sell you a repair.
