Symptom
KitchenAid the oven will not heat
A control panel that works normally and a cavity that stays cold. On electric ovens this is a short list of two or three parts; on a gas cavity it is a different short list, and knowing which you have halves the diagnosis.

Five ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
The bake element
Visible from the front on most electric cavities. A break, a blister or a section that never glows tells you the whole story without any tools.

The igniter, on a gas cavity
A weak igniter glows and never opens the gas valve, which reads as an oven that tries and never lights. This is the classic gas-oven repair.
Range burner & ignition repair from $175 -
The oven temperature sensor
Drifting rather than dead. The oven thinks it is up to temperature and stops heating, which looks like a heating problem and is a measuring one.
Oven heat & sensor repair from $195 -
The convection element or fan
On a convection oven the third element behind the fan is a separate circuit, and one mode working while another does not is the clue.
Oven heat & sensor repair from $195 -
The control board or a relay
Where a cavity ends up when the elements are proved good. Also where a range goes after a brownout, and where an F#E# code on the display points.
Cooking control & display repair from $265
In five minutes
Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.
-
01
Test bake and broil separately
They are different circuits. One working and the other not is the single most useful observation available, and it takes two minutes.
-
02
Look at the element while it runs
Evenly orange along its length is healthy. A dark section, a blister or a visible break is a diagnosis you can make from the kitchen floor.
-
03
Photograph any code on the display
Both letters and both numbers. These codes clear themselves, and the photograph is often the most useful thing anybody has on the day.
-
04
Then book the visit
Tell us gas or electric, single, double or a combination unit with a microwave above it, and which modes still work.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
A shortcut
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About KitchenAid the oven will not heat
If you are looking up kitchenaid oven not heating, this is the page: the oven will not heat, what it usually turns out to be, and the check worth doing before anybody is called out in Miami.
The fastest diagnosis is the code
Look at the elements with the oven on bake, from a safe distance: a bake element that glows evenly along its length is working, and one with a break, a blister or a dead section is not. If the broiler heats and the bake does not, you have already narrowed this to one element and its circuit — and that is worth saying when you book.
Three parts, and you can see one of them
On an electric cavity the heat comes from elements you can look at, the measurement comes from a sensor you cannot, and the decision comes from a control board. Because the elements are visible, an owner can do a real part of the diagnosis from the kitchen floor — which mode works, which element glows, whether it glows evenly. That is worth five minutes before anybody drives anywhere.
Built in, and what that means for the visit
A wall oven lives in a cabinet opening with its wiring behind it, so anything at the back means the appliance comes out. On a double or a combination unit that is two people and planned time rather than a surprise on the day. It is also why the model number is on the frame inside the door rather than anywhere convenient, and why a photograph of it saves a phone call.

Questions about KitchenAid the oven will not heat
The broiler works but the oven does not.
That is close to a diagnosis on its own. Bake and broil are separate elements on separate circuits, so a working broiler proves the power, the control and much of the wiring, and points hard at the bake element or its relay.
It heats, but it takes forever.
That is usually the sensor rather than the element — the oven is measuring badly and cycling the heat off too early. It is a different page from a cavity that stays cold, and it is generally a smaller repair.
It stopped after the power came back on.
Try the documented reset before you book: off at the breaker for a full minute, then back on. The manufacturer names that procedure for several control codes, and a control caught out by a brownout often comes back with it.
