Symptom
KitchenAid freezer is cold but not freezing
A freezer holding somewhere around twenty degrees instead of zero is a different problem from one at room temperature, and usually a better one. It is still cooling and failing to keep up, and that narrows the list considerably.

Five ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
A door or drawer not closing square
Even frost across the compartment is the signature. In this climate a seal that sits slightly proud costs a freezer its temperature within days rather than months.
Door, gasket & alignment repair from $155 -
The defrost system
Heater, thermostat or sensor. The coil ices over, air stops moving across it, and the compartment slowly loses the argument. The commonest real repair here.
Refrigerator defrost & cooling repair from $245 -
The evaporator fan
Cold made and not moved. The freezer runs marginal and the fresh food side is usually worse, because it depends on that fan entirely.

A compartment packed solid
Air has to circulate. A drawer filled to the back wall blocks the vents and produces a freezer that will not hold however well the system is working.
-
The sealed system
Reached by elimination rather than assumed. A compartment at room temperature with the light on is a different and more serious picture than one at twenty degrees.

Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.
-
01
Measure it for four hours
A freezer should sit around 0°F. Ice cream is a bad instrument — it softens several degrees before anything else in the drawer does.
-
02
Look at where the frost is
Even across the compartment means the door. Concentrated on the back wall or the coil means defrost. This one observation does more narrowing than anything else on the page.
-
03
Check the drawer closes and the vents are clear
A bag of ice or a stacked box fouling the drawer keeps it open a fraction all day, and a compartment packed to the back wall stops the air moving at all.
-
04
Then book the visit
Tell us the temperature you measured, where the frost is, and whether the refrigerator side is holding. That is three sentences and most of a diagnosis.

Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About KitchenAid freezer is cold but not freezing
The fastest diagnosis is the code
Put a thermometer in the freezer for four hours and read it rather than judging by the ice cream. Then look at where the frost is: even frost across the whole compartment points at the door and warm air getting in, while frost concentrated on the back wall or on the coil points at the defrost system. That is the same distinction a technician looks for.
Marginal is a different problem from dead
A freezer at twenty degrees is still working — it is losing an argument with something rather than having stopped. That is why the list here is dominated by airflow, doors and defrost rather than by compressors. A compartment at room temperature with the light on is the picture that changes the conversation, and it is much rarer than people expect.
What August does to a freezer
Every time the drawer opens in a South Florida kitchen, the air that goes in is carrying water, and that water becomes frost. The defrost cycle has more to remove here than the same cabinet would anywhere dry. It is why a seal that is slightly proud matters more here, and why frost is worth acting on early rather than living with.

Questions about KitchenAid freezer is cold but not freezing
How long is the food safe?
A full freezer that stays shut holds for roughly two days and a half-full one for about a day, and every opening costs hours. Decide with a thermometer rather than by feel, and treat anything that softened and refroze as having been warm for a while.
Should I defrost it manually first?
You can, and it tells you something. If heavy frost is back within days, the defrost circuit or a door seal is the cause rather than a one-off. Never chip ice off with anything sharp — a punctured evaporator turns a repair into a replacement.
The freezer is fine and the refrigerator is warm.
That is the other page, and it is good news by comparison. It means cold is being made and not delivered, which is usually a fan, a damper or an iced coil rather than anything in the sealed system.
