Ask which machine it is
The one in the refrigerator door or freezer, or an undercounter machine with its own water line and drain. Same words on the phone, different appliance, different parts on the van.

Prove the water is arriving
Supply valve, filter, inlet valve and the fill tube — which freezes solid and then hides the reason it froze. On a refrigerator machine that is most of the list before the module is even considered.

Watch a harvest
Cubes that form and will not release point at the hot-gas valve or the sensor watching the plate on an undercounter machine, and at the ejector or the mold heater on a refrigerator module.

A shut-off arm, a switch or an optical sensor. A machine that has decided the bin is full when it is empty is a working ice maker that has simply stopped being asked.

The one in my refrigerator has stopped and everything else is fine.
Then work outward: the shut-off arm or switch, the filter if it is overdue, a fill tube frozen solid, the inlet valve, and only then the ice maker module. A refrigerator ice maker is a small machine bolted into a cold box, and most of what stops it is water not arriving rather than the module failing.
My cubes are small, hollow or cloudy.
That is the water rather than the mechanism most of the time — low pressure, an overdue filter, or scale in the water path. On an undercounter machine, cloudy ice specifically means the slow layered freezing that makes clear ice is being cut short, and it usually shows up months before the machine stops.
Why does my ice maker fail more often than everything else in the kitchen?
Because it is the hardest working part of a refrigerator and the one asked to do the least natural thing: ice is made in the freezer and then delivered through a warm compartment to a door. That is where the frozen lines, the clogged chutes and the leaks come from, and it is why this is one of the most common service calls on any French door cabinet.
