# KitchenAid the water dispenser has stopped

### The fastest diagnosis is the code

If it stopped within a day of a filter change, take the new filter out and try again — a cartridge that is not seated, or the wrong number for your cabinet, stops the water completely. Then draw off a couple of quarts to clear the air a new filter always introduces, because that alone accounts for most of the trickles we are called about.

### Work from the outside in

The order that saves time is: the filter, then air in the line, then the supply behind the cabinet, then the parts inside it. Three of those four are free, and the first one alone explains a large share of these calls — a cartridge that is the wrong number, past its life, or simply not turned fully home.

### Ice and water together tell a story

If both have stopped, the problem is upstream and shared: the valve, the line, the filter. If water flows and ice has stopped, everything shared is proved and the answer is in the ice maker or in the freezer temperature. Saying which of those two you have when you book is the single most useful sentence on the call.

The filter: wrong, old or not seated

These are sold as KAD1 to KAD6 and the identical cartridges as everydrop EDR1 to EDR6. The numbers are not interchangeable, and a cartridge not fully home stops the flow.

Air in the line after a change

Normal, and it clears itself once a couple of quarts have been drawn off. It is the reason a new filter so often makes things briefly worse.

The supply behind the cabinet

The shut-off valve, and the line itself if the cabinet has been moved. A kinked line behind a built-in unit is a real cause after any kitchen work.

A frozen line in the door

Water dispensed slowly and then not at all, in a cabinet running a little too cold. Ice in the tube looks exactly like a dead valve from the front.

The inlet valve or the dispenser switch

A valve that no longer opens, or a switch behind the paddle that no longer asks it to. These are the two real repairs on this list.

Try it with the filter removed

Many cabinets will run in bypass without one for a moment. Water with the filter out and none with it in tells you everything you need to know about the cartridge.

Draw off a couple of quarts

Slowly, into a jug. Air after a filter change is normal and this is how it clears. Do the same after the cabinet has been off for any length of time.

Check the valve behind the cabinet

And look at the line for a kink if the unit has been pulled out recently. On a built-in cabinet that means telling us, rather than doing it yourself.

Then book the visit

Tell us whether the ice maker is also affected. Water and ice both dead points at the supply; one working and the other not points somewhere much more specific.

No water, or a trickle

What it usually means

Nothing at all from the dispenser

A trickle instead of a stream

It stopped right after a filter change

Saying which of those two you have when you book is the single most useful sentence on the call.

### Which filter number do I need?

It is printed on the old cartridge and in the manual. KitchenAid sells them as KAD1 through KAD6 and the identical parts are sold as everydrop EDR1 to EDR6 — same cartridge, two names, which is why the aisle is confusing. The numbers are not interchangeable.

### The water works but there is no ice.

That is useful: it proves water is reaching the cabinet, so the supply and the filter are largely cleared. It points instead at the fill tube, the ice maker module or the freezer temperature — and that is a different page.

### Why does the light keep asking me to replace the filter?

Because it counts water rather than checking it, and it needs resetting after a change. The reset is a press-and-hold on the panel and the button varies by model. Until it is done, the light keeps asking.
