Establish which compartment is wrong

Thermometer in a glass of water, four hours, both sides. It sounds fussy and it is the difference between an airflow diagnosis and a sealed-system one.

Pull the grille and look at the condenser

No tools needed on most of these. Matted grey dust across the coil is a real cause here, and cleaning it is the cheapest outcome on the page.

Listen for the fan, and check the vents

Air has to get from the freezer to the fresh food side. A compartment packed solid against the back wall blocks that, and it costs nothing to move things and wait a day.

Then book the visit

Tell us which side is warm, whether the freezer is still holding, and whether there was a power outage in the last week. Those three answers do most of the narrowing.

### The freezer is fine. Is that good news?

Usually yes, and it is why we ask first. A cold freezer proves the sealed system is making cold, so what is left is getting that cold into the fresh food side: a fan, a damper, or a defrost problem that has iced the coil. Those are all far less expensive than the answer people fear.

### How cold should it actually be?

Around 37°F in the fresh food section and 0°F in the freezer, measured in a glass of water rather than by air. Air temperature swings every time the door opens and tells you almost nothing.

### It stopped cooling after the power came back on.

That timing is worth telling us. It may be nothing more than the cabinet needing hours to pull everything back down, or it may be a control that came up confused. A full breaker cycle of five minutes clears the second one often enough to be worth trying.
