A microwave that runs and does not heat is not dangerous to stand next to, but there is no reason to keep running it — you are heating nothing and stressing a circuit that has already failed. Unplug it and book, and do not open the cabinet in the meantime. ### Why can I not fix this myself? Because of the capacitor. It stores a charge large enough to cause serious injury and it holds that charge after the appliance is unplugged. On a built-in unit or a combination oven-microwave built into a cabinet, very often yes — replacing the appliance means the opening and the trim as well.
