### The fastest diagnosis is the code

Check the shut-off arm or switch is actually on — it gets knocked off more often than anything else on this list — and then check the filter, because a cartridge past its life or not fully seated starves the ice maker before it starves the dispenser. If ice stopped within a day of a filter change, that is almost certainly the connection.

### Two appliances, one complaint

The ice maker inside a refrigerator is a module in the freezer or the door, fed by the same line as the dispenser and with no drain of its own. An undercounter ice machine is a complete appliance that plumbs in, drains out, and runs its own cleaning cycle. They share a name and almost nothing else, so telling us which one you have is the first thing that shortens the call.

### Why ice is the first thing to suffer

Ice production is a good early warning. A cabinet working harder than it should — a loaded condenser, a marginal freezer temperature, a restricted water supply — makes less ice long before anything else looks wrong. So “it makes about half what it used to” is worth acting on, and it is often cheaper to answer then than after it stops altogether.

The shut-off arm or switch

Knocked into the off position by a bag or a hand. Free, instant, and genuinely one of the most common answers on this page.

The filter, or air in the line after one

Wrong number, past its life, or not seated. Draw off a couple of quarts after any change — air in the line is normal and clears itself.

A frozen fill tube

The classic on a refrigerator ice maker. Water freezes in the tube above the maker, stops the fill, and then hides the reason it stopped.

The water inlet valve

Production drops before it stops. Ice arriving slowly and small points at the water side rather than at the freeze cycle.

The ice maker module or the freezer temperature

A module that no longer harvests, or a compartment simply not cold enough to make ice at the rate it was designed to.

Check the arm or the switch

Every one of these has a way of being turned off, and most of them are easy to knock. Look before anything else — it costs nothing and it is often the answer.

Check the filter and its number

KAD1 to KAD6, or the identical everydrop EDR1 to EDR6. Match it to the model rather than to the last one somebody bought, and make sure it is turned fully home.

Confirm the freezer is at 0°F

A compartment a few degrees warm makes less ice long before it makes none. A thermometer for four hours settles it.

Then book the visit

Tell us whether the dispenser still gives water, whether yours is the ice maker in the refrigerator or an undercounter machine, and whether a filter was changed recently.

That is the most useful sentence you can give us. It proves water is reaching the cabinet, which clears the supply, the valve under the house and largely the filter. What is left is the fill tube, the ice maker itself, or the freezer not being cold enough.

A phrase we hear weekly. It is usually air in the line or a cartridge that is not fully seated, occasionally the wrong number for the cabinet. Draw off a couple of quarts of water, give it a cycle or two, and check the part number before assuming the machine is at issue.

### How much ice should it actually make?

Less than most people assume, and less in a hot kitchen. A refrigerator ice maker is a small module bolted into a cold box; the undercounter machines are rated by the pound per day and are a different appliance. If yours halved over a season rather than stopping, that is a supply-side or a temperature story.
