# KitchenAid refrigerator water & dispenser repair

### The water path, end to end

Water enters at a shut-off behind the cabinet, passes an inlet valve with a fine screen in it, goes through the filter head, fills a tank in the fresh food compartment, and then splits — some to the dispenser, some up to the ice maker. Every leak and every no-water complaint is somewhere on that line, and it is worked through in order rather than guessed at.

### What actually goes wrong

- **The inlet valve**, failed or starved by low pressure.
- **The filter**, overdue, wrongly seated, or the wrong number entirely.
- **The defrost drain**, blocked, which is most of the water that appears on a floor with no dispenser involved.
- **The tank and its fittings**, which sit inside the cabinet and leak into the crisper before they leak onto the floor.
- **The dispenser switch, solenoid and chute flap**, which ices shut in a humid kitchen.

Find where the water actually is

Under the crisper, on the floor at the front, inside the freezer under the drawer, or only when the dispenser is used. Four different sources, and where it collects is not where it starts.

Work the water path from the wall inward

The shut-off behind the cabinet, the line, the inlet valve and its screen, the filter head, then the tank in the fresh food compartment. Low pressure and a wrongly seated filter both look exactly like a failed valve.

Check the filter itself

The right cartridge, correctly seated, and not overdue. These are sold as KAD1 to KAD6 and the identical parts are sold under the everydrop EDR names, which is why the store aisle is confusing and why the wrong one gets fitted.

Then the dispenser

Switch, solenoid, chute flap and the door that has to close on it. A chute that ices shut is a door seal problem wearing a dispenser costume.

### Which water filter do I need?

The maker sells them as KAD1 through KAD6, and the identical cartridges are sold as everydrop EDR1 to EDR6 — same part, two names. The number is printed on the old filter and in the manual, and they are not interchangeable. After fitting a new one the filter indicator needs resetting or it keeps asking.

### There is water on the floor and the ice maker is fine.

Then it is usually one of three things: the water line or its fitting behind the cabinet, the inlet valve, or a defrost drain that has blocked so meltwater is running out of the cabinet instead of into the pan. The third one is the commonest and it is a clearing job rather than a part.

### The dispenser drips for a while after I fill a glass.

A little is normal — the line above the chute empties. A steady drip is the valve not seating or air in the line after a filter change, and running two or three quarts through it usually settles the second one.
