# KitchenAid downdraft vent & lift repair

### Ventilation that is part of the appliance

A downdraft draws across the cooking surface and down through the cabinet instead of up into a hood. This maker builds it three ways: as a retractable vent that rises out of the counter, as a downdraft cooktop, and as a downdraft slide-in range. In all three the blower and the ducting belong to the appliance, which is the single most useful thing to know when you book.

### What actually goes wrong

- **The lift mechanism** — motor, track and switch — on the retractable units.
- **Grease on the track**, which is a clean rather than a part.
- **The blower motor**, under the counter where nobody hears it start to complain.
- **The damper**, and ducting that runs under the floor or through cabinetry.
- **Grease filters**, which load faster here than on a hood because they sit at cooktop level.

### Remodels are the usual suspect

Downdraft ducting is the part of a kitchen most easily damaged by work that had nothing to do with the appliance. A system that has never been right since a remodel is worth investigating as ducting before anybody orders a blower.

### What it costs

From $225. The exact cost is confirmed after the on-site diagnostic.

What this involves

Lift motor, track and switch diagnosed before anything is forced

Blower, damper and ducting under the counter checked

Downdraft cooktops and ranges treated as one appliance

Do not help it up by hand

The gearing is what holds the carriage, and forcing it is how a slow downdraft becomes a stuck one. If it is part way up, leave it there and book the visit.

Clean and test the track

Grease on the track is the commonest reason one of these binds, and it is a cleaning job rather than a part. A carriage that moves freely by design should not need persuading.

Separate the lift from the extraction

A downdraft that rises and does not pull is a blower, a damper or ducting. One that pulls and will not rise is the lift motor or its switch. Two different repairs on one appliance.

Follow the duct under the floor or the cabinet

Downdraft ducting runs where nobody looks, and a crushed section or a damper stuck shut explains a system that has never worked well since a remodel.

### My downdraft will not come up.

The lift is a motor and a track, and the usual causes are the track binding on grease, the motor itself, or the switch. Do not help it up by hand — the gearing holds the carriage, and forcing it turns a small repair into a large one.

### Is a downdraft cooktop a hood repair or a cooktop repair?

A cooktop repair. The blower, its motor and its ducting are part of the appliance, which is why a downdraft that has stopped pulling is booked as a cooktop or range call rather than a hood call. This maker builds downdraft cooktops and downdraft ranges in gas and electric.

### It rises but hardly pulls anything.

Filters first — downdrafts have grease filters too and they load fast because they sit right at cooktop level. After that it is the damper or the ducting, which on a downdraft runs under the floor or through the cabinet and is where a remodel does its damage.

### What does the repair cost?

From $225, with a track clean and a switch at the low end and a lift motor or blower above it. The exact cost is confirmed after the on-site diagnostic and agreed with you before anything is ordered.
