This is the “runs but does not heat” complaint and it is not owner-serviceable. - **The door interlock switches**, which stop the appliance the moment they disagree with each other, and which produce a machine that is dead for no visible reason. - **The touch panel and the control board.** - **The vent fan and its damper**, on the over-the-range and hood combination units. - **Charcoal and grease filters**, on any unit that is recirculating rather than ducted outside. ### One safety line worth reading The capacitor inside a microwave holds a charge that can injure you after the appliance has been unplugged for a long time. The turntable, the light and the fan run from ordinary household power; the heating comes from a separate high-voltage circuit, so all of that can look perfectly normal with no heat at all. It is not an owner repair — there is a capacitor inside that holds a dangerous charge after the appliance is unplugged — and it is a repair worth pricing against the appliance on an older machine. ### My hood and my microwave are the same appliance. Is that a problem? It is a fact worth planning around. A microwave-hood combination ventilates the cooktop underneath it, so when the microwave fails you lose the extraction too, and replacing it means matching a specific width and mounting. It is also why a fan that will not switch off is a microwave call rather than a hood call. ### The buttons do not respond. Try the control lock first — most of these lock the panel from a long press on one of the number keys, and it is switched on by accident constantly. If the panel is genuinely dead, cut the power at the breaker for five minutes before assuming anything. After that it is the touch panel or the board, which are separate parts and separate figures. ### How do I reset the clock after an outage? Through the clock or settings button rather than by unplugging it — and this is worth doing rather than living with a blinking display, because some functions will not run until the time is set. On the units with a display that has gone dark entirely, five minutes off at the breaker is the next step. ### Is a countertop model worth repairing? Often not, and we will say so. A built-in or a hood combination is a different question entirely: the appliance is fitted, matched to a cabinet opening, and replacing it can mean cabinetry work.
